So when you execute a perfect pitch on your second shot on a par 4, time slowing and heartbeat thumping as the ball rolls, rolls and drops into the cup, it gives you the deep satisfaction that it was all your work. Or billowing drives into the left-side water hazard because you didn't take the wind into account.Īll as it should be, really, but PGA Tour gives an impressive sense of being in control. You will likely find at the outset that you are wildly overhitting approach shots, balls skittering across greens on approach and ending up in the rough behind. ![]() And as the pronounced physics of ball and course demand a high degree of accuracy, PGA Tour hits a fine balance between game and simulation. Purists can scale back on the guides if they wish, but given you are putting yourself in the spiked shoes of a professional golfer, visualising the calculations they are making with every shot feels like a natural, if gamey, fit. Though there are currently sporadic issues with camera angles on tricky lies near the green, which seem like an extra punishment for overhitting your approach. There is a plethora of visual feedback for each type of shot which gives you a good guide of where to aim. Much of the work is done at pre-address, flipping between clubs and shot type. But, oh, it is extremely satisfying when you do. You can try to underswing to leave it shorter, tap a button to power-up or add spin while the ball is in the air, but to get a perfect hit on the ball is a big ask at even the easier settings. Keep it straight, though, or you are liable to shank it into the trees. The act of hitting the ball is a satisfying thing indeed, the game placing a great deal of demand on its players but giving them a host of tools and visual cues to help them on their way.Īs is now golf game tradition the swing lies in your thumbstick pulling down for the backswing and flicking up for the strike. Yet this new entry is a surprisingly understated and supremely accomplished golf sim. Particularly as 2015’s Rory McIlroy's PGA Tour was not, ahem, on par with the series’ best. Such an absence might make you wonder if a comeback is ill-advised.
